About Randomaze

Randomaze is a free maze game that runs in your web browser. Every day it builds a new maze, with several floors, locked doors, hidden keys, ladders and the occasional one-way wall, and drops you inside it to find the way out. There is nothing to install and no account needed to play.

Why a daily maze?

Each maze is generated from a seed, a number that drives all the random choices that shape it. The same seed always builds the same maze. Randomaze uses the date as the seed, so everyone who plays on the same day walks through exactly the same maze and can compare how many moves it took them. Tomorrow there will be a different one.

Signed-in players also get a Small, Medium and Large maze each day, and can follow their scores over time. Scoring and Maze Sizes explains how that works.

How it's made

Randomaze is a hobby project built and run by one independent developer. The mazes are made with a version of the Growing Tree algorithm, changed to give each maze several entrances and long winding routes between them. After a maze is carved, the generator adds locked doors and hides their keys, then checks that the maze can always be solved and that a player can never get stuck. How Do You Make a Maze? explains the method step by step, with a demo you can run.

The 3D view is drawn by your browser with plain web technology (HTML, CSS and JavaScript), so it works on computers, tablets and phones.

Open source

The maze generator and the game's core interface are open source. You can read the code, run the demo, or build your own maze game with it at github.com/wilminator/randomaze, under the GNU AGPL 3.0 license with an exception that lets programs using the libraries choose their own license.
