Scoring and Maze Sizes
Randomaze doesn't time you. When you solve a maze, the game compares the size of the maze with the number of moves you needed. This page explains that score, how your results add up over time, and how big each kind of maze is.
Size per move (S/M)
The score for a maze is its size divided by your moves, written S/M:
- Size is the number of cells (squares) in the maze, on every floor. A maze 8 cells wide, 7 cells deep and 2 floors tall has 8 × 7 × 2 = 112 cells.
- Moves counts everything you do: every step forward or back, every turn left or right, every ladder climbed, every door opened, and the final step out of the exit. Bumping into a solid wall doesn't count. Walking into a wrong exit does, because a wall drops to seal it.
A higher S/M is better. If you solve that 112-cell maze in 80 moves, your S/M is 112 ÷ 80 = 1.400. Wander around for 224 moves and it drops to 0.500. Because the score is a ratio, a big maze and a small maze can be compared fairly: a bigger maze allows more moves for the same score.
When you solve a maze, the win screen shows the maze size, your moves and your S/M.
Your running scores
If you are signed in, each win is saved to your account and the win screen also shows how it changed your running scores:
- Lifetime S/M is the total size of every maze you have solved, divided by the total moves you used. Bigger mazes carry more weight, because they add more cells and more moves.
- Daily, Small, Medium and Large S/M are worked out the same way, using only the wins at that size.
The History button on the main menu lists your recent games for each size, with the date, the size, your moves and your S/M. It keeps one game per size per day (the day is counted in UTC time), and if you solve the same size twice in one day it keeps the better result. History shows your last 10 days for each size. Every win still counts toward your lifetime and per-size scores, even when history keeps a different game for that day.
Playing without signing in works exactly the same, but your results are not saved.
Maze sizes
Each day brings a new maze of each size. The exact dimensions come from the day's seed, so the size of today's maze varies from day to day. The Start Game menu shows the cells and doors of each of today's mazes before you choose. Here is what to expect:
| Maze | Typical size | Usual range | Floors | Door colours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daily | about 110 cells | 55 to 190 cells | 1 to 3 | 7 to 14 |
| Small | about 55 cells | 40 to 70 cells | 1 | 4 to 8 |
| Medium | about 145 cells | 80 to 215 cells | 1 to 3 | 4 to 12 |
| Large | about 400 cells | 280 to 530 cells | 2 to 4 | 12 to 24 |
The "usual range" covers about 8 days out of 10; now and then a maze comes out smaller or larger. Larger mazes also tend to have more openings to choose from and more one-way walls. The Daily maze is the one everyone plays, signed in or not. Small, Medium and Large are offered after you sign in.
How to raise your S/M
- Use the map. A few seconds of looking saves a lot of moves.
- Turning costs a move. Backing out of a dead end with the back key costs one move per step and no turns.
- Locked doors tell you where you will need to come back to. Plan a route that picks up keys on the way.
- Read How to Play for the full controls and rules.
The daily leaderboard
S/M rewards few moves. The daily leaderboard is a separate, optional race against the clock: it ranks the first solve of each day's maze by time, from the start of the maze to the winning step, and shows the moves too. Equal times go to the player with fewer moves. Turn it on in Settings once you are signed in.
